Mazuri® research grant awards up to $10,000 to qualified applicants.

Mazuri® Exotic Animal Nutrition is now accepting applications for their annual research grants. Since 2009, Mazuri® has offered those seeking to advance exotic animal nutrition research an opportunity to apply for additional funding. To receive funding, applicants compete for up to $10,000 of grant funds for research projects focused on exotic animal nutrition.

One grant can make a huge impact

“The Mazuri® research grant allowed me to complete a critical part of my dissertation research. Without this grant, I would not have been able to finish this part of my study,” said recent award-winning Doctoral student Amanda Ardente at the University of Florida-Gainesville.

Ardente’s research focused on comparative diet analysis of saltwater fish consumed by free-ranging and managed bottlenose dolphins and purine metabolism of bottlenose dolphins. Her research has broad implications for all marine animals that consume saltwater fish. Once the findings were made available to the greater scientific community, Mazuri® started to evaluate Ardente’s work and how to best reformulate their marine animal tablet to continue improving the quality of life for animals in zoos and aquariums worldwide.

Advice from our reviewers

Before working as Nutritionist, Research & Development at Mazuri®, Dr. Troy Tollefson was a grant reviewer. Dr. Tollefson offers his advice for applicants.

“Anyone with a hypothesis, solid science, and a proposal that advances the knowledge of exotic animal nutrition has a chance of winning,” Tollefson says.

A well-rounded three-person panel made up of industry experts from academia and zoo professionals evaluate the merits of the proposals. The reviewing team is designed to reflect those parties who would most benefit and be able to put the research to good use, but just as important are those that can evaluate the merit of each project.

For the betterment of all animals

“As a leader in exotic animal nutrition, Mazuri® is dedicated to advancing the body of exotic animal scientific knowledge and supporting the industry’s future leaders. We are helping lead the way in learning more about these amazing animals and how to better care for them,” Tollefson adds.

There is no clause to give exclusivity to Mazuri® or first choice on scientific advancements and research. Mazuri® encourages those who win to publish their research and share it with the scientific community as a whole to help advance the state of exotic animal nutrition.
