Meet Dr. Troy

Troy is a nutritionist for MAZURI Feed. He conducts research and formulates diets for a variety of animals, including anything from guinea pigs to giraffes.

Experience
Troy has a Master's and Ph.D. from Washington State University, where he conducted nutritional research on captive and wild brown bears and mule deer, and participated in the development of one of the largest research projects for MAZURI Feed testing the Wild Herbivore diet. Prior to working with MAZURI Feed, Troy worked at SeaWorld/Busch Gardens where he was responsible for the nutrition of over 350 different species and over 2,000 animals. His research included projects such as milk studies with white rhinoceros and manatees, and reformulating and refining diets to solve nutritional problems like copper deficiency in blesbok antelope.

In His Words
“I joined the MAZURI [feed] team for three simple reasons. First, I believe in the products. Second, [I believe] MAZURI [feed] is the best provider of animal nutrition in the world! Third, our dedication to research and improving nutrition for exotic animals is No. 1.”

“While I have strong interests in a variety of exotic animals, I would have to say that my favorite is the brown bear. During my time at WSU, I had the opportunity to work with over a dozen wonderful brown bears in a variety of research projects at WSU, but also out int he Alaskan Wilderness!”

Best Advice to Exotic Animal Owners
“I find that many owners feed their animals based on past experience. However, our knowledge of exotic animals is changing every day, so I urge people to do the research necessary to make sure they find the best nutritionally balanced diet for their animal.”

International Feed Manager

Meet Fumiko

Fumiko provides technical and sales support to zoos, aquariums, veterinarians, private exotic animal owners, and feed dealers. Her territory covers Asia.

Experience
Fumiko obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science from the University of Kitasato, in Japan. Her studies included one year dedicated entirely to animal nutrition.

In Her Words
“I have always had a love for animals, since the age of 4 when I witnessed my dog giving a birth. I have been determined to do something for animals when I grow up. I do believe one of the biggest strengths that Mazuri has is that we do not only sell products, but we are also able to provide research-based information to show why those products are good for animals. There is not as much research done about exotic animal nutrition as other animals like companion animals and production animals, and Asian countries are not as geographically convenient for extensive animal research. My goal is to work as a bridge between the Mazuri team and zoos, aquariums, and animal nutrition specialists in Asia to create a partnership and not just a manufacturer-customer relationship. This helps our customers pursue nutritionally what animals really need, and to help them make a decision that is best for the animals.”

Best Advice to Exotic Animal Owners
“Take some time to research what your animals really need to eat. You might be surprised to know that food they seem always happy to eat might actually impair their health and quality of life!”
